Scientometric assessment

  • Web of Science Core Collection – a database available under a national license. It allows for searching bibliographic records from major journals, conference abstracts, and books, as well as conducting citation analyses of publications or authors.
  • InCites – under the national license, a tool is available that enables a multifaceted evaluation of a given institution's scientific activity; it assists in the development of research strategies and supports decision-making regarding publications, human resources, and administration. It is also an exceptionally useful resource for individual authors, allowing them to define and assess the impact of their own scholarly work, establish collaborations with researchers from other institutions, and select appropriate venues for publishing their research findings. InCites also facilitates the analysis of individual journals, publishers, research funding agencies/organizations, and specific research areas. The tool analyzes data contained within the SCIE, SSCI, A&HCI, JCR, and ESI databases. Access requires a personal account on the Web of Science platform.
  • Scopus – a database created by Elsevier and made available under a national license. It contains abstracts of articles from scholarly journals and books, and provides information on citations.
  • SciVal –  under the national license, the SciVal tool is available for analyzing data contained in the Scopus database. It enables the visualization of the achievements of scientific institutions, comparisons with other entities, the evaluation of potential collaborators and partners, and the analysis of trends in the scientific world. It provides access to data analysis for over 8,500 research institutions across 220 countries. To use the platform, you must have a personal account on the SciVal server; you may also use an account created on the ScienceDirect or Scopus servers.
  • Google Scholar Citation – free service that, once a profile is created, allows an author to track citations of their own work and automatically calculate their h-index. The calculations are based on publications retrieved by Google Scholar.
  • Publish Or Perish – free bibliometric program that acts as an add-on for Google Scholar, enabling the calculation of citation counts and the Hirsch index (h-index). It analyzes works that are available online. The program is available on the website of its creator, Anne-Wil Harzing. – Harzing.com.
  • The Hirsch index (h-index) is a method for measuring scientific achievement based on an author's individual body of work; it is derived from the relationship between the number of citations an author’s papers have received and the number of their indexed publications. It represents the number of publications that have each received at least *h* citations—for example, an h-index of 3 means that an author has 3 publications, each of which has been cited at least 3 times.
  • The Journal Impact Factor (JIF) is a metric for journal citation frequency. It is calculated as the ratio of the number of citations received in a given year by articles published in a journal over the preceding two years to the total number of articles published during that same period. The JIF is sourced from the *Journal Citation Reports* (JCR) database, which is updated annually by Clarivate Analytics. The JIF list for a specific year is typically released in the middle of the following year.
  • SNIP (Source Normalized Impact per Paper) is a metric used in the Scopus database that determines a journal's citation impact within a specific scientific discipline, accounting for the contextual influence of citations relative to the overall volume of citations in that field. The calculation considers the number of articles citing a given journal in relation to the number of references contained in their respective bibliographies.
  • SJR (SCImago Journal Rank) is a metric based on journals indexed in the Scopus database. It assesses a journal's prestige by considering the number of citations it receives, with the value of each citation weighted according to the quality of the citing journal and the academic field to which it belongs. A high SJR value indicates significant recognition and standing within the scientific community. Indicator values and rankings are available via the SCImago Journal and Country Rank platform.
  • CiteScore is a metric that measures the average citation impact of journals indexed in the Scopus database. It represents the average number of citations received in a given year by publications released over the preceding three years. The calculation is based on all document types from that period, including peer-reviewed articles, editorial notes, letters to the editor, errata, etc. CiteScore is calculated once, following the conclusion of a given year, and is typically published around the middle of the following year.

We offer comprehensive support in the field of bibliometric and scientometric analysis to academic staff and doctoral candidates at Bydgoszcz University of Science and Technology.

We assist in evaluating research output at both the individual and institutional levels, and provide support to university authorities and heads of academic disciplines in preparing analyses for the purpose of evaluating research activity.
